Review - 11 Minutes by Paulo Coelho
11 MINUTES
11 MINUTES
11
minutes is a novel, published in 2003, by a well-known Brazilian novelist Paulo
Coelho.
The
novel 11 Minutes is quite convincing and interesting in a different kind of way. The book
is all about exploring different phases in life. It is about exploring ones
feeling and the way one looks certain things in life.
The
main theme of the book was the search of the main character for the meaning of
life.
It
was the bestseller of that time. It flows very quickly. Not surprisingly that
Coelho’s books are such bestseller. They tie you down like a soap-opera and
leave you with a certain imprint of profoundness.
Storyline
‘Once
upon a time there was a prostitute called Maria’-thus begins the novel 11 Minutes
This
is the story of Maria a young, beautiful girl from an ordinary Brazilian
village.
Her
first encounter with love happened at a very small age and left her
heartbroken, making her believe that love is such a terrible thing that can
ever happened to someone and will always makes the individual suffer.
The
author has created a strong, sensual young woman, who learns a bit about sex as
a teenager and then at 19 making a bad or one can say an ill-advised decision leaving
Rio de Janerio with a complete unknown Swedish guy in order to achieve more
fame.
She went
to Europe then and started working in a nightclub there. But in no time she
became dissatisfied and left the job after a heated argument with the owner of
the night club. After that she tried to pursue modelling but was didn’t succeeded
, also she was running out of money, so her need for money raised and she ended
up being a prostitute at rue de Berne at Geneva
She
quickly become successful in her profession there and other girls and
co-workers begins envy her. Soon her smooth life turned into a whole new phase
when she met a painter and fall in love with him immediately. Then things
started being complicated and complex, she had to split herself between love
and her profession. Soon she decided to leave Geneva and went back to her home
town with the memories of the painter guy.
Why one should read it
In 11 Minutes I
really liked the main character, Maria.
She
always strive to learn and understand circumstances, trying to make her life
better through learning and experiencing different things. I admire this trait
a lot.
All
in all, it’s pretty good and I enjoyed reading it.it is probably the first book
I read having a prostitute as a main character and moreover I haven’t read a
book with such a detailed sexual intimacy stated so explicitly it also tells
about sado-masochism very well.
